The Resident’s Body as Canvas: WILD ANIMALS IN CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

Philippine Urological Association Midyear Convention was held in Cagayan De Oro City last April 18 to 22, 2012. This involved days of learning, fun and excitement especially on the second day wherein the much-awaited body painting competition was done.

Body painting is a growing trend these days and is becoming one of the most popular types of body art. The residents’ bodies were used as canvas to portray different kinds of animals that can be found in the jungle. The participants probably thought of what animal would stand out the most; what animal could scare the others;  what would shine because of their color?

Eleven participants from 8 different training institutions joined the body painting contest. The participants were the following:

Emmanuel Degal, M.D. from AFPMC as chameleon

Joseph Ursua, M.D. and Lawrence Lu, M.D. from EAMC as tiger and wild boar

Michael Conrad Mendoza, M.D. from JRMMC as panda

Ryan Halili, M.D. and Glen Santok, M.D. from NKTI as yogi bears

Michael Chua, M.D. from SLMC as werewolf

John Paul Marinas, M.D. and Mark Roa, M.D. from UP-PGH as angry birds

Marlon Martinez, M.D. from USTH as leopard

Martin Reyeg, M.D. from VMMC as Zebra

The following institutions were announced as winners: UP-PGH -third place, AFPMC –second place, USTH – first place.

The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, especially when only wearing bottom wear and body paint. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start to shine.

B-I-N-G-O in C-D-O

The PUA Fun Night saw a new format during this year's midyear convention in Cagayan de Oro.  The previously decked cards for poker with their suits of kings, queens and jacks have been replaced with new ones.  The cards now sport numbers on a grid of 25.  BINGO!  You guessed it.

The event which has been sponsored by Astellas these past years was held at the Aqua Seafood restaurant, which is just about an 8 minute walk from the Mallberry Suites - the official PUA Convention site.  The evening's activities started off with dinner and music by the local band.  A little later in the evening, the present PUA president, Dr. Raul Andutan graced the event with his presence, giving a warm message of welcome to the newly arrived delegates and their families on their first night in the City of Golden Friendship.

Hosted by Astellas' big men, Larry Utitco and Raoul Franco, the duo did a fine job of calling out the drawn balls - not without their witty quips and comical side comments.  The participants were also given a chance to increase the chances of bagging one of the major prizes at stake - an HP mini netbook and a Samsung Galaxy tablet - by allowing them to purchase additional game 3 and game 6 cards.  There were 6 games in total, each having the players form more than just a single line to win one of the many prizes, which also included an 8G iPod Touch, a Philips iPod dock and a pair of Smart headphones.  The lucky ones who were able to form patterns like an S, an A, a C and completely block out all their numbers included Dr. Nelson Patron, Dr. Eli Madrona, Dr. Alfredo Uy, Jr., Dr. Coco Agustin, Prince Vallejos, Dr. Glenn Maclang

The PUA Fun Night, indeed, lived up to its name and everyone went home with a little wish that next year, hopefully, they'd be able to shout out followed by a policeman's whistle - BINGO!
