The Section of Urology of the Department of Surgery of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital has continued to be in the forefront of providing quality urologic care and competitive training in urology. In terms of urologic residency training, our residents have achieved a one hundred percent passing rate in the recent Philippine Board of Urology in service examination held last June 2009, the Philippine Board of Urology written examination held last July 2009 and the Philippine Board of Urology oral examination held last September 2009.
Being in the forefront of treating prostatic malignancy, two of our active consultant staff, Drs. Dennis Lusaya and Jason Letran were the speakers of the second Philippine Urological Association bi-annual meeting entitled “Is the Philippines Ready for Robotics?,” held last August 26, 2009 at the A Venue Suites, Makati Avenue, Makati City. The section also participated in the last St. Luke’s Urology Week celebration spearheaded by the lecture of Dr. Dennis Lusaya on the use of laser in urologic practice. Our senior resident, Dr. Mellmont L. Ocampo also won second place in the St. Luke’s urology case report paper presentation. Many of our active consultants have attended the last American Urologic Association annual convention last April 2009 in Chicago, Illinois.
Lastly, out residents attended a joint laparoscopic workshop with the General Surgery and Gynecology held last September 28 – 29, 2009 at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital Benavides Cancer Institute with our very own graduate, Dr. Aldrin Gamboa as one of our post-graduate course faculty.
The section still believes that there is still much room for improvement and advancement in the field of urology. Our aim for next year is to continue providing the best urologic care for our patients and the best training for our residents; and to be in the forefront of urological advancement.
